    We see the bulk of human action as being composed of a limited number of irreducible fundamental movements. These fundamental movements we call functional. They include, but are not limited to, squatting, deadlifting, cleaning, lunging/running/walking, jumping, throwing, climbing, and pressing.

    This reductionist view has us asking of every exercise ‘How universal is the motor recruitment pattern?’ When this litmus is applied to biking and the bench press, the answer comes back ‘not very.’ When we ask the same of running and push-press, the answer comes back ‘very.’

Our private gym (built next to our house in a residential neighborhood) includes power cages / squat racks, Olympic lifting platforms, kettlebells, a more-than-ample collection of barbells, iron weights and olympic bumper plates, Eleiko and Texas Power Bars, gymnastic rings, Dynamax med balls, kegs, tractor tires, sledge hammers measured distances for 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 525m and 750m runs, Concept 2 rowing machine, weight belts, harnesses and the best pull-up bars you’ve ever tried; and an unheated swimming pool.
